Todd has partnered with the experts at Kahala on this limited-edition take on their legendary Aloha Shirt. Originally made from repurposed kimono and yukata cloth, rayon became the fabric of choice for aloha shirts after WWII when silk was rationed for parachutes; it has a lustrous feel similar to traditional silk and is naturally breathable. Kahala works directly with Japanese mills to develop their special fabric, a unique rayon filament. Aloha shirts are defined by their silhouette — short sleeves, open collars, and a loose fit and straight hem designed to be worn untucked — and their prints. In this case, an archival print that pays homage to the influence of mid-century art and design in Hawai‘i featuring abstract fish.

Kahala’s story started when co-founder George Brangier came to California from France and met legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku, who invited him to visit Hawai’i with him. George fell in love with the islands and moved there. In 1936, he and his business partner, Nat Norfleet, started a clothing brand named Branfleet. Later renamed Kahala Sportswear, their signature item is the Aloha Shirt — they were the first business to switch to factory manufacturing these iconic shirts, and are the oldest still-operating apparel company in Hawai’i today.

Fantastic shirt

Material feels great (thank you Japan) and the fit is very good (thank you Hawaii), but the shirt is definitely about the print. and I really like the midcentury design aesthetic. I think it looks even better in person (the last photo looks most like the teal looks to me in person). Very pleased. Between this, its Natural Tiki sibling and the black Abstract Aquatic Camp Shirt, I think I have my print shirts sorted for the season, although I think this one may be my favorite.

Fit, Fabric, and Pattern

Just arrived today. Tried it on. Normally, I'm a Large but I took the site's suggestion and ordered Medium. Perfect fit as I don't like these shirts to swallow me up. Fabric very comfortable, not too heavy, not too light. They got the description just right on the site (an archival print that pays homage to the influence of mid-century art and design in Hawai‘i featuring abstract fish). Can't wait to wear this. Will definitely order another (Japanese Coral).
