Todd Snyder x The Met Van Gogh Self-Portrait Scarf

Todd Snyder + The Met

Size

This gauzy scarf is made in Italy from a lightweight, almost sheer cotton fabric. It’s finished with a single hand-rolled-and-stitched edge for a look and feel somewhere between a bandana and a scarf (with the versatility of both). Printed on top is an adaptation of Vincent van Gogh’s (Dutch, 1853–1890)Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat(1887) in exceptional detail, digitally printed across the entire garment. This particular piece was produced while Van Gogh was in Paris; short of funds but determined to hone his skills, he became his own sitter: "I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model."

As part of its mission tocollect, study, conserve, and present significant works of art across time and cultures in order to connect all people to creativity, knowledge, ideas, and one another, The Metropolitan Museum of Art invited Toddto design a wearable, art-inspired collection. “The colors and brushstrokes of Van Gogh, Degas, and Manet feel incredibly modern, incredibly relevant,” says Todd of the pieces he chose to adapt for this unique collaboration.
