Todd Snyder x The Met Saint-Valéry Chore Coat

Todd Snyder + The Met

Size

The traditional chore coat silhouette gets an artistic update in this limited-edition collab with The Met. Our take on the utilitarian classic features workwear-inspired detailing: three pockets reinforced with rivets for durability, a brush or pen pocket, a D-ring for your keys, and a locker loop at the back to hang it all up from. The coat itself is a fitting reference to the jackets painters often wear while they work, as is the canvas it’s made of. Printed on top is an adaptation of Edgar Degas’s (French, 1834–1917)View of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme (1896–98). This painting of a medieval town on the Picardy coast northwest of Paris was made later in Degas’s studio. The ambiguous and fractured elements may result from the synthesis of two separate drawings sketched on-site; as Degas once advised: “A painting is something that requires as much trickery, malice, and vice as the perpetration of a crime, so create falsely and add a touch from nature.”

As part of its mission tocollect, study, conserve, and present significant works of art across time and cultures in order to connect all people to creativity, knowledge, ideas, and one another, The Metropolitan Museum of Art invited Toddto design a wearable, art-inspired collection. “The colors and brushstrokes of Van Gogh, Degas, and Manet feel incredibly modern, incredibly relevant,” says Todd of the pieces he chose to adapt for this unique collaboration.
