New York, NY (January 8, 2013) – Designer Todd Snyder and iconic brand Champion collaborated to launch a men’s sportswear line for Fall 2013. The debut collection, entitled “City Gym”, is inspired by archival Champion pieces and vintage photos from the New York Athletic Club.
Snyder designed the collection in partnership with Champion’s Chief Design Officer, Ned Munroe, and Design Director, Joanne Sessler. Together they scoured Champion’s vast archive of sales catalogs and vintage samples to find styles and fabrics that would seamlessly meld with Snyder’s love of classic American tailoring.
“Champion has always symbolized quality and American style,” Snyder says. “I love the idea of mixing tailoring with their 1950’s gym issued items.”
"The Todd Snyder brand is a perfect complement to the Champion brand and we share his excitement in creating this new product line inspired by Champion heritage,” said Ned Munroe, Chief Design Officer Champion athleticwear. “Todd’s history of working with iconic brands and adding a modern aesthetic to archived Champion apparel means consumers can rediscover the authenticity and quality of Champion."
The 35-piece collection features a neutral heathered palette of grays, oatmeals, and stone colors accented by rich team colors – crimson, vintage green and washed royal.
The line will include garment dyed t-shirts ($55 retail), vintage thermal long-sleeve crews ($85 retail) and sweats ($125 retail) that have an authentic feel and would impress any avid collector of Champion. All styles carry an authentic 1950’s Champion label with “T.SNYDER” stenciled in the back of each garment – reminiscent of the Champion gym uniforms worn by Todd Snyder in his school years.
The collection also features merino wool varsity sweaters ($275 retail), waxed duffel coats ($450 retail) and modern wool flannel varsity jackets done in athletic heathers and loden olives ($700 retail). Also included in the collection are a hooded marsh coat ($800 retail) made of Japanese brushless fleece, a pair of knit cargos ($250 retail), button fly pants made from a heavy athletic jersey and trimmed with chino fabric. Snyder has even designed a slim-fit suit ($1,600 retail) and tie ($95 retail) made of the iconic reverse weave sweatshirt fabric.
“City Gym” will land in select North American stores in August 2013. The collection will be showcased at Project NY January 21-23 and at the Tents at Project Las Vegas February 19- 21. Sales and distribution will be handled by Todd Snyder via their showroom in New York.
About TODD SNYDER
The designer menswear label was founded by Todd Snyder in 2011. An industry veteran, Snyder's 20 year career spans experience with industry heavyweights: Ralph Lauren, Gap and J Crew. Influenced by his Iowa upbringing, the Todd Snyder collection is rooted in American classics: tailored suiting, traditional knits and outerwear styled with thoughtful ease and finish, yet constructed using luxurious Italian and Japanese fabrics and yarns. Soon after showing his third collection in February 2012, Todd Snyder was selected as one of GQ Magazine’s Best New Designers in America and nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Menswear Award, both highly coveted nominations. Spring 2013 brought another nomination as FGI named him a Menswear Rising Star Nominee. Todd Snyder is available at MR.
