Fox has been making some of the world’s best umbrellas in Surrey, England for over 150 years. This particular one is large, with a 44” diameter canopy in a white-and-green Gordon dress tartan, made from a durable, waterproof nylon. The lightweight steel-and-nickel frame is capped in a curved ash wood handle for a comfortable grip. All umbrellas are handmade to order in the UK.
Thomas Fox began making and selling umbrellas in London in 1868, eventually selling his business to the Dixon family, who still run it today. The steel umbrella frame, perfected by Samuel Fox (of no relation to Thomas), replaced older whalebone frames and revolutionized the industry. As a result, the Fox business expanded globally during the 1930s, and again in the middle of the century with the introduction of durable nylon covers. Fox’s handcrafted umbrellas are beloved worldwide, by J.F.K. to Japanese royalty, and pop up on everything from “Peaky Blinders” to “The Crown.”
