The Outerwear Guide

A good coat is the foundation of a winter wardrobe; a great coat makes a statement, season after season. From the Walking Jacket to the Officer Coat, we dive into what makes these seven outerwear styles special, so you can find the one that suits you best.

The Walking Jacket

This earned its name because it’s the kind of easy, slightly slouchy coat you throw on as you head out the door, with two big pockets and functional cuffs for a practical-but-tailored look. Here, it’s crafted from from rustic virgin wool woven in Italy, in a jumbo blue and yellow plaid that puts a twist on more traditional plaids.

The pEACOAT

A winter classic, modeled on the navy reefer jacket first worn by sailors over a century ago, with big lapels that pop up and close with a throat latch against inclement weather. Ours is cut from a rugged Italian wool blend, carrying on the naval tradition; wool is warm even when wet, and naturally water-repellent.

The Belted Coat

A relaxed topcoat with a clean, contiguous line, thanks to “splittable” tailoring, an artisanal technique that weaves two layers of cloth together rather than sewing them. Ours is made from buttery soft Italian cashmere, with exaggerated patch pockets and a removable belt so you can wear it sharp or slouchy.

The Car Coat

Named for the open-top automobiles it was first designed to protect drivers in, the car coat has come to refer to a style that hits at mid-thigh, for all the style of a topcoat with none of the formality. Ours is cut from a soft Italian wool-cashmere blend from Bellandi Mill, in a heathered mélange.

The Topcoat

A classic gentleman’s topcoat, cut full but tailored to fall below the knee, equally at home over denim and a sweater or as a polished finish over a full suit. Ours is made from a heathered Italian wool, nylon, and cashmere blend — in our signature Snyder Olive — with a pick-stitched peak lapel for an artisanal touch.

The Balmacaan

Named for a Scottish estate near Inverness, where this overcoat originated, the Balmacaan is cut with a rolled open lapel and raglan sleeves for a roomy, comfortable fit. In other words, just the thing to wear over layers in damp, chilly weather. Ours is woven in Italy from wool, nylon, and silk, in a scaled-up herringbone with slubs and neps in the fabric for subtle texture.
