The origins of the Car Coat are in its name: it was originally long, designed to keep motorists warm in early automobiles that were open to the elements. Over time, the term became synonymous with a shorter coat, one designed to hit at mid-thigh. Ours goes a little shorter still, falling just below the waist — and now it’s back for the season in a rugged Italian wool Donegal. Design details include a single-breasted front, notched lapels, two welt-style hand pockets and adjustable cuffs. It’s an easy, chic layering piece: start with a base layer, add a shirt, and move up to a sweater as the temps continue to dip.
