Houndstooth Coats

Houndstooth Coats

Our Houndstooth Coats are classics in the making, and the personification of the Todd Snyder design approach: gentsy, sartorial fabrics updated in modern fits and silhouettes. Think smart tailoring meets savvy street style, complete with careful detailing and fine tailoring. Houndstooth itself is a classic pattern and a Todd Snyder staple — and where better for it to appear than on our jackets and coats? Also called shepherd’s check, dogtooth, and puppytooth (a charming name for the smaller version of the print), houndstooth’s origins as a pattern go back many years…over 1,500 to be precise. In fact, it’s believed houndstooth — a two-toned, jagged check pattern — was first worn by Scottish shepherds as a kind of camouflage. Like many practical and utilitarian styles, it eventually caught the eye of the wealthy and has been a symbol of high style ever since. Our Houndstooth Coat collection is designed with year-round wearability in mind. Todd Snyder’s wool houndstooth fabrics, imported from Italian mills, are durable and warm — an excellent choice for outerwear and coats in the fall and winter, when protection from the wind, snow, and other elements is key. On the other end of the spectrum, lightweight cotton houndstooth jackets are a perfect pick for easy layers when the weather warms up in the spring and summer. Though we love houndstooth in its most famous format (classic black and white), we like it just as much in natural earthy hues, too — everything from brown and yellow to blue and grey. Naturally old-school — especially paired with pleated trousers and a tailored button-down — it’s easy to go more modern by pairing a Houndstooth Coat with brighter colors and something like a hoodie. Either way, a Houndstooth Coat will never go out of style. Mix and match with anything, for any occasion, in any season with total ease. From Suit Jackets and Track Jackets to Car Coats and Sport Coats (and even their matching Suit Pants, Track Pants, Trousers and Gurkhas) this traditional suiting fabric adds something special to any look.
