The loafer style, inspired by Indigenous moccasins and fishermen’s slip-ons, dates back to 1930s Norway. It was an instant hit, catching on across Europe and America, where it first came to be known as a “loafer.” In 1934, G.H. Bass designed the Weejun: a loafer with a strip of leather stitched across the saddle of the shoe, featuring a shaped cutout. These would become the shoe of choice for young men and students in the 1950s; they would keep a dime in the cut-out, which eventually gave the shoes their colloquial name, “Penny Loafer.” Todd’s take on Tricker’s classic penny loafer features a shiny, black calf leather upper and chunky Vibram Tweety sole.

Family-owned for five generations and founded in 1829, Tricker’s still makes its leather shoes the old-fashioned way in Northampton, England. Fun fact: since 1989, Tricker's has held a Royal Warrant for shoe manufacturing awarded by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.
