For his latest collaboration with New Balance, Todd Snyder created an extremely limited-edition sneaker called the NB 992 10th Anniversary. The running shoe is a luxe update on the noble 992, beloved of Steve Jobs and fans of the color gray alike.
To celebrate the 992 silhouette and commemorate ten years in business, Snyder designed his version, a symphony of grays in vegetable-tanned leather. The sneaker features “2011” on the wearer’s left heel, and “2021” on the wearer’s right, and it comes with three shoelace color options, all shades of white/gray.
Snyder chose to create the gray color story for two reasons: it is the most classic shade of the style, and grays have long been part of his brand DNA. “Charcoal and gray have been signature colors in our design since the beginning, and for our 10th anniversary I wanted to create a farewell to the 992 that felt like a favorite room,” says Snyder. “I was trying to capture the feeling of a gentleman’s library that has alounge-y feel—a couch, bookshelves, maybe a few Jean Prouve chairs, a fireplace and a bar cart.”
