Todd Snyder + Private White Manchester Wool Cashmere Peacoat in Charcoal

The pea coat is an iconic outerwear staple that was originally worn by Dutch mariners who gave it its name from from the Dutch or West Frisian word “pijjekker” or “pijjakker,” in which “pij” referred to the coarse twilled blue cloth used, and “jakker” meant coat.

Our softer, modern update comes from British outerwear maker, Private White V.C., who has been keeping sailors warm and dry for a century. Made from an Italian wool-cashmere blend, this naval-inspired jacket features a robust lapel that can be popped up to protect the wearer from inclement weather.

I hope it gets cold this winter

It reminds me of a classic pea coat from WW2 era with some modern characteristics. No other pea coat compares in my opinion. Made in England is extremely attractive to me. The coat itself is made of quality fabrics and durable to the touch. I stand just under 6ft and over 5’11” weighing in between 190-195 pounds. I have been recently fitted for a 44R. I purchased a LG in this coat per the advice from your staff over the phone. The fit is spot on. I will still have room for sweaters or a suit underneath. I was originally worried about this being a slim fit but it is just perfect .

Heirloom quality

I was growing tired of disposable purchases. I know this coat will be with me for life, in one form or another. Loving the details, the cut and the way it drapes my shoulders. This coat succeeds where so many others fail. Thank you Todd Snyder for delivering such an amazing piece. Going to debut this gem for date night at Carbone.

Fit is Way Off

I originally wanted to purchase the Navy wool/cashmere peacoat, but was confused on sizing given that one reviewer said it way oversized and to go one size down, while in the company's answers to questions it says to go one size up. I provided my measurements via e-mail (I'm a 38 short in sport jackets and either a S or M in coats) and requested the company's advice on sizing. The reply was an XS, but when I wrote back that I want t make sure there would be room for a heavy sweater or down vest, they replied that a S might be better. I then saw that this grey version by a different manufacturer was on sale. The measurements provided by the company for this coat and the navy one are the same so I ordered the S. Its a beautiful coat, but its way to tight. It would be a bit tight with just a T shirt - no way I could wear it with any thing heavier or with any kind of layering. So my one star is not for the coat itself, but for the inability of the company to understand its sizing and to recommend a size that is even close. I guess if I was the same size as the company's models everything might work out OK, but that is not the real world. I'm returning the product and will stick with shopping in store where I can actually try on the clothing.

Nice Details But Lacking Symmetry

This is a nice coat with lovely details including real horn buttons. The small amount of cashmere adds softness to the touch. My only gripe is that it wasn’t cut symmetrically. The right side of the garment had more fabric and looked a little boxier than the left. I ended up getting the jacket taken in at my local tailor for a slimmer fit, and they were able to compensate for the unsymmetrical cut.

Nice Coat

This is a gorgeous coat that I look forward to having for many years. It has real horn buttons (no extras are included though), a soft fabric and corduroy lined pockets. The coat wasn’t quite cut symmetrically, but my local tailor was able to compensate when I had the jacket taken in for tailored/slim fit. My only gripe is that the inside button is sewn into just the lining instead of the thicker, more robust wool blend material. This may be a wear-point down the road after the jacket has been taken off and put back on many times.
