In February 1975, New York City had a billion-dollar deficit, bankruptcy looming, crime on the rise; and it was in desperate need of hope. Governor Hugh Carey pointed out that despite everything people still loved New York. The ad agency Wells Rich Greene was commissioned to create a campaign to repair the city’s image and boost tourism (check out the star-studded TV spots on YouTube), and Milton Glasser, a native New Yorker and a guru of graphic design, created the iconic I NY rebus (a rebus is a graphic that combines letters and pictures).
History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme. So, at this moment when some other businesses are taking a powder on our home town, we at TS are doubling down with these civic-pride sweats. We’re just sorry that Mr. Glaser isn't around to wear one. He passed away in June of 2020. At the time of his death, he was reportedly working on a new slogan to lift the city from its current malaise, a bold treatment of the word TOGETHER.
