MEET YOUR MAKER: Atelier & Repairs’ Maurizio Donadi
With an L.A. archive that houses more than 10,000 vintage items from fatigues to tees, Maurizio Donadi is drawn to items that have lived a life. As he describes his sourcing process, “We try to select the best quality sweatshirts, but ones that otherwise might be going to a landfill because they have a cigarette burn or a ketchup stain.”
A 35-year veteran of the apparel business, Donadi and his team of artisans then cut around the damaged part of the garment and use traditional patching and embroidery techniques to transform these beautifully patina-ed styles into singular works of art. Rather than trying to hide the damage, they celebrate an item’s battle scars by using contrasting colors and patches to call attention to them. On some of the pieces, students of needlework might recognize the Japanese technique of sashiko. This style of embroidery (which translates as “little stabs”) is used to reinforce or repair worn fabric or tears with patches, making the darned piece ultimately stronger, warmer and (in our humble opinion) chic-er.
