Taking as his inspiration the clean court shoe with the irreverent blue smile on its toe, Todd has created a collection that took the sartorial codes of racquet sports then reinvented them for today’s modern mavericks who have their own unique personal style, both on-and-off the court. The sneaker was originally developed in the 1930s for its namesake Jack Purcell, the Canadian badminton player, who was a natural at hyping his sport and his eponymous kicks. Since then, the original court shoe became a go-to for everyone from tennis champions to creatives who redefined their crafts including James Dean, Ray Eames and Kurt Cobain.
This Crewneck Sweatshirt takes many of the classic elements of sports apparel and reinvents them for the modern maverick. The color is a creamy, off-white called Egret; the soft French Terry sweatshirt is flocked on the outside giving it a slightly velvet-like handfeel. In lieu of a team or college logo, the sweatshirt’s graphic is the Jack Purcell Racquet Club logo composed of two crossed badminton racquets and a shuttlecock. The waistband and cuffs are ribbed and feature the red and blue tipping that run throughout the collection. Other key design elements include a jock tag on the wearer’s lower left side, and a neck tape in a pink that’s a nod to the classic pink oxfords favored by clubmen from a bygone era. I bought three items from this collection and ended up keeping only one, the terry polo. All three items were noticeably lower quality than what I am used to from TS. I had barely removed them from their plastic bags when this became very obvious. My assumption is that they were made cheaply by Converse and then TS labels were slapped on after production. It was a bit of a bummer because I'm a huge Jack Purcell fan and was really excited to get some limited edition tennis-themed gear from TS. Hopefully this is not a trend.
