Art: Brancusi in New York

The photos of Constantin Brancusi in his New York studio—surrounded by his minimalist bronze, wood, marble and limestone sculptures—looking contemplative in a pair of chinos, a thick wool sweater and that iconic salt-and-pepper beard are some of the coolest examples of relaxed elegance I’ve ever seen. So I’m looking forward to the Brancusi in New York: 1913-2013 exhibition (and the accompanying book from Assouline) debuting tonight at the Paul Kasmin Gallery. Rarely seen, mostly bronze, and unfailing in form it’s a crash course in how much the Romanian master's clean geometric lines have impacted everything from international starchitects to humble Iowa-born designers over the past century. As Brancusi once said, "Manhattan is my large-scale studio." I couldn't agree more.
